Maths for Kids Who Learn Differently

Watching your child struggle with math is hard, especially when you know how bright, curious, and creative they are. Maybe you’ve tried regular tutoring, or extra practice at home, but nothing seems to “click.”

If your child has dyslexia, ADHD, or other learning differences, traditional math programs can leave them feeling frustrated and left behind.

At The Literacy Corner, we do things differently. Our math program is built from the ground up for kids who process information in their own unique ways.

Every lesson is gentle, fun, and movement-based, taught by tutors certified in our Orton Gillingham-based math program who understand how to meet children where they are whether that’s counting to ten or preparing for more advanced concepts.

Why Math Is Tough for Neurodiverse Kids and How We Help

Numbers and symbols can feel confusing and overwhelming for children with math difficulties like dyscalculia or math anxiety, as well as for children with dyslexia, memory-based learning difficulties or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Tasks like sequencing steps, remembering math facts, or understanding word problems often bring stress, not confidence. But it’s not your child’s fault, and it’s not yours, either.

What most tutoring misses is this: Kids with learning differences need math taught a different way. They need lessons that are active, hands-on, and tailored to their pace, not just endless worksheets and rote repetition.

Our approach is designed for these kids. We use multisensory techniques that bring math to life, engaging all the senses through touch, sight, sound and movement as we explore each new concept. We break math skills into small, manageable steps so nothing is overwhelming or rushed. Above all, we believe every child can feel successful in math, regardless of their starting point.

Our Approach: Orton Gillingham & Multisensory Math

Just like we do with reading, our math program uses Orton Gillingham principles to make learning stick. That means:

  • Explicit instruction: We teach every step directly; nothing is left to guesswork.

  • Multisensory lessons: Kids use visual aids, blocks, drawing, movement, and even games to understand new ideas.

  • Structured and cumulative: Skills are introduced in a logical order, building on each other so kids always feel ready for what’s next.

  • Individualized for every child: We meet your child at their level and move at their pace, celebrating every win along the way.

Our tutors are certified in our OG-based math program, experienced, and passionate about helping neurodiverse learners thrive not just in math, but also in confidence and self-belief.

How It Works

1-on-1 sessions: Personalized attention, every time.

Gentle, movement-based lessons: Designed for kids who need to wiggle, talk, and play as they learn.

Flexible options: In-person tutoring in the Lower Mainland, or online sessions anywhere in BC or Canada.

Ongoing communication: We keep parents informed, celebrating growth and sharing effective strategies that can be applied at home.
