Orton Gillingham Tutoring
For Effective Learning
The Orton-Gillingham approach is a proven, research-based method tailored to help students with dyslexia or reading challenges. At The Literacy Corner, we use this method to create clear, hands-on, and personalized learning plans. These plans help improve literacy skills.

Here’s how the Orton-Gillingham method shapes our teaching and helps your child succeed. Tap the images below to learn more about the key principles that make OG effective

Sequential Approach
At TLC, we implement the sequential Orton-Gillingham component. We start by teaching the 44 sounds of English, building a strong phonemic base. We then advance to the 200+ ways to spell these sounds, starting with simpler patterns.
For instance, did you know the long /a/ sound has eight graphemes? These include “a” (apron), “a_e” (cake), “ai” (rain), “ay” (play), “eigh” (eight), “ea” (great), “ey” (they), and “ei” (vein). Our tutors guide students through these patterns systematically, fostering confidence and mastery.
Diagnostic & Prescriptive Approach
We implement the prescriptive component of OG by starting with a consultation to understand each child’s needs. Our first meeting with each child is a comprehensive assessment to identify specific skill gaps.
Our tutors give detailed lesson notes after each session. This helps the child’s team—parents, teachers, and education assistants—stay aligned. We conduct detailed post-assessments, and often midway assessments, to ensure targeted, practical instruction that drives progress.
Multisensory Approach
Our multisensory approach engages students’ senses in both in-person and online settings. In-person tutors use tools like magnetic letter tiles, letter rocks, and sand trays. These objects help make learning fun and hands-on. Online, students interact with drag-and-drop letters and explore virtual 3D worlds, keeping lessons dynamic.
Both formats incorporate auditory and kinesthetic cues, facial expressions, and activities, ensuring an engaging and effective experience for students, especially those with dyslexia. Learn more about why we use this approach.
Individualized Approach
Based on our first meetings and assessments, our tutors can adjust our flexible plans. They will match the student’s learning style and goals. This can include phonics, decoding, reading fluency, or comprehension.
Regular progress checks and collaboration with families help maintain effective teaching. This approach supports students with dyslexia or reading challenges in succeeding at their own pace.
Explicit Approach
We implement the explicit Orton-Gillingham component by teaching reading and spelling rules with clarity and precision. Our tutors explain concepts like letter-sound relationships and syllable patterns clearly. They use examples that fit each student’s needs. Our simple method, based on the Orton-Gillingham approach, helps students with dyslexia or reading challenges learn important skills.
Systematic Approach
At TLC, we use a clear plan to teach literacy skills. We start with sound symbol recognition. For example, the letter c makes the /s/ sound and the /k/ sound.
Then, we move on to one-syllable words Cat), to learning more complex phonics rules and multiple syllables (i.e. for-get) and morphemes (i.e., --ful) to syntax and the sentence.
Our tutors follow a clear lesson plan. Each lesson builds on the one before it. This helps students with dyslexia or reading difficulties. They have a clear path to succeed in reading and spelling.
